ABOUT THE PROJECT

CAPS-CO: Carbon Accounting of Product Supply Chains using ONTOCHAIN

With global governments and the EU tightening their environmental legislation to accelerate the transition to Net-zero, businesses are under increasing pressure to firstly quantify and then reduce their carbon emissions.

CAPS-CO proposes a novel solution intertwining between the innovations of ONTOCHAIN and LCA/PCF within the exciting application domain of medical products. CAPS-CO will focus on design ideation and concept testing of its system. The innovation process and multidisciplinary approach means we can respond to new ideas and capture technologies and the latest research from across our team and from ONTOCHAIN. This will facilitate the further understanding of the user needs of manufacturing communities in the UK and Europe. The project outputs will enable the team to expedite the time to market of an idea (CAPS-CO) that will disrupt the market and become a leader in the CCA market in a way that benefits manufacturers, consumers, and the EU economy. Stakeholder engagement will allow us to undertake user-centric iterative design testing to adapt the product to user needs and allow us to transform our innovation into a scalable industrial product.

Motivation for the project:

With governments tightening their environmental legislation to transition to Net-zero, businesses are under pressure to quantify and reduce their carbon emissions. From this, CAPS-CO will enable the rapid deployment and exploitation of ONTOCHAIN, providing enormous commercial and social impacts.

Generic use case description:

The use case will involve medical manufacturing industry partners providing real-life data to test the effectiveness of our solution, thus creating a working demonstrator of the tool prior to penetrating the market.

Essential functionalities:

Corporate Carbon Accounting (CCA): Accurate corporate level carbon accounting using primary data.
Product Carbon
Footprint (PCF): individual product carbon footprint calculated using primary data throughout the supply chain.  Tokenisation:  Incentivising the use of the CAPS-CO tool.

How these functionalities can be integrated within the software ecosystem:

CAPS-CO uses libraries and components from ONTOCHAIN for rapid development, the successful deployment of which will have massive economic, social, and environmental benefit across sectors, contributing to the impacts of ONTOCHAIN.

Gap being addressed:

There is a gap in the market for a web-based tool that facilitates and incentivises both corporate carbon accounting and product carbon footprint using sensitive primary data in a secure, transparent, and trustworthy manor.

Expected benefits achieved with the novel technology building blocks:

CAPS-CO shares the same vision of ONTOCHAIN and could employ the already constructed framework provided by ONTOCHAIN. By design, the ONTOCHAIN-based solution will facilitate a protected exchange of data, whilst semantically linking business’ operation systems.

Potential demonstration scenario:

This project will yield a demonstrable tool that will interact and exchange data with the business’s resource management, calculate CCA/PCF securely off-chain, and store resulting emissions data on-chain for immutable and secure records.

TESTIMONIAL

We found the process challenging and interesting, with a successful outcome. We enjoyed working with our mentors, they provided support where required and helped the consortium to overcome key technical challenges. We found it extremely useful to have the benefit of the wider community, providing us with inspiration and knowledge from a multitude of backgrounds. We would be interested in further funding rounds with the ONTOCHAIN collaborators in the future to grow the CAPS-CO project.
